On an unusually cold morning on the 28th Jan 1986 at 11.39 am the Challenger space shuttle lifted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida. Fifty Eight seconds into the flight a plume was observed coming from the right hand rocket booster. Fifteen seconds later the Challenger broke apart and the cabin compartment was thrown from the plumes of smoke into a ballistic trajectory. All seven members of the crew were killed in the disaster.
