About The Artwork

In the great tradition of the end of 19th Century's Symbolists, I wanted to depict a visual allegory that we are all familiar with: Severance. Parting with something or worse, someone we love is always a moment filled with deep emotions that can sometimes linger in your soul for months or years. But beyond that very human fact of life, I wanted to address a deeper concept, a more global spiritual concept that encompasses all religions yet goes way beyond all of them: Spiritual severance, from our creator, or whoever, whatever source is responsible for our very existence. Originally, what triggered the theme of this painting was the song of the same name, by the band "Dead Can Dance."

Christophe Vacher is a two-time Emmy Award Winner and two-time Annie Award Nominee who has provided artwork for the Animation industry and most major Hollywood Studios since 1989 as a painter, designer and Art Director. He worked on movies such as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, Tarzan, Fantasia 2000, Dinosaur, Treasure Planet, Shark Tale, Enchanted, “9” and Despicable Me. He has been Art Directing Hasbro’s Transformers TV series for 7 years. Originally French, he now lives in California. His personal paintings can be seen permanently in several galleries and various collections in Europe and the United States. He has given numerous lectures at various events and universities across the US and France, including the San Francisco Academy or Arts, the University of California in Berkeley and the California State University of Northridge. The style of Christophe’s personal imagery has multiple influences; from old painting schools like the Hudson River, The American Realists, The great American Illustrators, The Romantics and the European Symbolists for their grandiose, theatrical scenery, to more contemporary artists like Sandorfi, Beksinski, Ugarte and The Visionaries (Les Visionnaires) in France. Travel and music are a large part of his inspiration as well.
