About The Artwork

As a young photographer, Steve McCurry sets out in the 1980s to capture the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan. In a refugee camp in Pakistan he takes a photo with Sharbat Gula, the girl with the green eyes, who thus becomes an iconic figure for the Afghan struggle and makes her part of the collective memory in the Western world. Her story deals with notions of romanticism and aestheticism, media appropriation and exploitation. My artwork is an exploration of the multi-faceted reception this picture has received.

Born 1983 and raised in a mountain village in Switzerland. Currently living in Zurich. I am primarily a painter. But some time ago, I began cutting the paintings before weaving them into each other. My work reflects on the thought patterns in which the human being perceives its surroundings. When we look at the world, we never see it in its entirety, we give more importance to certain details while blocking out others. Our perception is very selective and fragmented. But still, in our minds we build it up to a seemingly whole picture or narrative. What results is not the reality, but a wonderful image of reality, fragmented, but still perfectly accomplished in its own right. My work is an expression of this process.
