Shattered Poems #69 is part of an ongoing series interpreting Persian letters as visual elements to express a narrative. Here the repeated letter "gaf" is enlarged in various sizes, repeated and rotated to interact with one another to create a more gestural vocabulary. I rely on the letters shapes -the curves, lines and points rather than their sound or verbal contex to communicate a sentiment. On this canvas the letter "gaf" (a letter which we do not have in English,) is repeated and interlaced to form a rhythmic dialogue. It's as though the letters are moving harmoniously in space, like a choreographed dance. The series began as a challenge to create an abstract calligraphy with a phrase from Rumi, the 13th century Persian poet. It then became more driven by the individual letters to represent a visual poem. This way of expression opens the dialogue to become more emotive and universal.
