About The Artwork

This painting called 'She' features a friend of mine who inspired me to write a poem (reproduced below). She is someone who has achieved a lot in life even though she is still young. Here she is taking time out, but not taking time out if you know what I mean. The phone is her connection to the office, to clients, to her business and to her future. She wants to retire at 35, and she will probably do it. She is someone that most people that know her describe as INSPIRATIONAL. Here is the poem I wrote which kinda sums up her mantra The Decision to Grow What do you trust in, when the challenges come Deciding to grow sometimes involves a choice between risk and comfort We have security, comfort and safety But sometimes we need to step out Sometimes we face the fear of failure So we won’t step out we won’t start walking Whether I am a five-talent, two-talent, or one-talent person Is not what counts in the long run I must come to identify, cultivate, invest, prize The talents that have been given to me I need to connect, like a button to a garment An unconnected button is useless To grow sometimes it involves Deep, intimate, honest conversations with yourself To reach out for something beyond yourself To make sacrifices to achieve a goal To put off gratification now for something far greater later It’s all about becoming something bigger than you are right now Not to look back and see the person you could have become But did not What are you doing today with what you have been given What are the steps you need to take to turn things around Remember the future only comes one day at time So what will you do today You can only get to the other side of the river if you step onto The next stepping stone Remember that big steps are often the result of many smaller steps Maybe adjustments need to be made to your thinking As well as learning to take different actions than those you’ve taken before Lack of courage can sometimes leave us imprisoned Paralysed by fear If you want to walk on water you’ve got to get out of the boat Fine when the winds are calm, but what happens when there’s a storm In the act of facing the storm you discover what lies inside you Test and trials locate us, they reveal where we really are on the map of life Take action, reassert some command over your destiny Refuse to betray your deep values Find purpose in difficulty and suffering Seek and exert control where YOU are able to Rather than just giving in to difficult circumstance Stay walking Feel the fear and do it anyway Don’t mind failure. You learnt to walk by falling, stumbling and bumping into things How do you view the things you bump into now you are an adult Failure is a moment, so don’t build a monument to it If you want to walk on water you’ve got to get out of the boat Don’t do nothing, the single most destructive thing you can do is nothing What does nothing lead to? Remember to do something whilst you are waiting Patience is the bridge that will carry you to where you need to be Remember you are in a season, but remember also that seasons change Waiting is part of the process of becoming what you are meant to be So what is the answer? Do the thing first that you would rather do last And get out of the boat! Author Simon Gregory Please quote the author if copying for any purpose

BIOGRAPHY Born in 1961 Simon spent his formative years growing up in a small country town located in the beautiful English county of West Yorkshire. Up until the age of 14 he lived between England and Nigeria. His father worked for a number of German and Swiss owned Textile companies as a chemist and technical director specializing in color formulations. 'From my father I gained a real understanding of the complexities of color. My figurative work is an attempt to understand mood related through color. My early works represent a frenetic pace of life, whereas the pieces I make today  are a deliberate attempt to rediscover a more harmonious way of being'. Following his fine art studies he found some success during his early 20's. However it wasn't enough to support a young family. His passion for art led him towards an early career in the graphics industry, followed by cinema advertising and later working for a number of international publishing houses. 'In the mid 90's my life took a dramatic turn when I stepped into the world of Mergers & Acquisitions, working as a conference speaker, travelling around Europe and America and eventually becoming CEO one of the group's European subsidiaries'. In 2003 Simon rediscovered his first love and began producing again, building his initial collection around his experiences in the often frenetic world of corporate finance. The style of these early works create a sense of detachment from the speed and pace of corporate finance with the main setting being New York. At the same time they draw a clear stylistic line between his work then and his work today. "After relocating to Switzerland, my work began to evolve around my reflections on the environment of my home village of Cully, Bourg-en-Lavaux (a UNESCO protected wine growing region)", "I tend to use Cully and the region as my canvas, however the theme of my work lies elsewhere and is based on recovering time. I look to help the viewer to enter a world we are all familiar with but tend to find difficult to engage with in a meaningful way. In an age where we struggle with what I call 'the tyranny of the urgent' in others words 'urgent things taking the place of important things' finding space has become more difficult. We cleverly invent gadgets to save time, however we tend to fill the saved time with more busyness! The works are formulated to aid people in reflection and to 'press the pause button on purpose'. Cully is my inspiration for this.
