Sindoor is usually worn by married women along the parting of their hair.Use of sindoor denotes that a woman is married. The parting of hair is symbolic of a river of red blood full of life. When the sindoor is removed then the river becomes barren, dry and empty. The red sindoor is significant for the married woman as she is full of colours. Hindu Married Bengali women celebrated their sindoor or vermilion. They do it every year. On the last day of Durga puja, women apply sindoor on the goddess’s feet or forehead and then start applying it to all the married women around, smearing each other with it. The main purpose of this custom for married woman to celebrate traditional Sindoor Khela is to pray for long and happy married lives.

Kolkata-based figurative artist studying landscapes, cityscapes, human figures and nudes. As a young boy from a seaside village of West Bengal, Harisadhan Dey was in awe of the real-life drama of village people. Religious social rituals, village shrines, living images of the famous Gangasagar mela cast a spell on him. Harisadhan works closely with rhythms and realities related to the rural masses. The colours of traditional rituals and celebrations invoke a deep sense of spirituality in him. Chiaroscuro of nature, human form and expression is a hallmark of his work. Harisadhan's paintings is steadfastly seeking its cultural and spiritual roots.
