About The Artwork
Sirens at the Gate began as a black and white watercolour. Inspiration came from a very old photograph found in a junk store. Possibly anyway or a book. The photo was easily in the later 1800’s of the remains of some temple. Just the pillars left. Aged and in disrepair. I have no idea where, or if they still stand. If they do is it Turkey, Egypt or a dusty Roman outpost. Standing next to the pillars, one man, to gauge their immense height. By bits colour invaded, saturated at times and then they appeared, the two sirens. I do not know who they are or where they came from.

Artist Statement: I avoid full abstraction but rather prefer to build on a narrative. Narratives which change and evolve as the visual story reveals itself. Layers painted over layers, attacks and retreats, questions without answers. Books, music, theatre, history and life all provide inspiration, allowing a work to be what it tells me it wants to be. The work must be free to be what it is within its own universe. On its own terms. I work primarily on heavy board or wood with acrylic paint but do include elements of collage.
