Skopas was born in Parikia (on the island of Paros) (1780?). At the invitation of the Abbot of Thera, he arrived in Thera in early 1809 to commission some sculptures. The work would take about a year and a half. The marble was selected by the artist himself in the mines of Paros. Béla Hamvas: Carnival (detail)
