About The Artwork

Fujimura was invited by Dillon Gallery to co-exhibit with Georges Rouault's Estate. These "Soliloquies" paintings were matched with Rouault's late paintings at Dillon's Chelsea gallery. "Soliloquies - Joy" was the final of a set of paintings, and one that has been requested by many to be made into a print. This is an unsigned print, but through Saatchi made accessible to general public. The painting began a journey into painting into a dark canvas, a particular combination of traditional gesso technique developed by Fujimura that continues into his later Qu4rtets series. Since Rouault began in post-war Parisian darkness, Fujimura thought to represent painting refractive colors into the darkness, as a form of aesthetic and spiritual journey.
