About The Artwork

The hands are significant in dislocating the connection an audience would normally encounter with a traditional portrait. The face and hands can tell us so much; how someone feels; if they are lying or telling the truth etc. Cheater the individual peeks through her fingers at the on looking world. The playful nature of the title alludes to a game; like hide and seek, where the individual cheats to see where the other is hiding. What is to say that conformity is not a “game”? Who sets the rules? How are these rules circulated? Can everyone play or just the chosen few? Who decides who wins or loses? The title can also allude to disloyalty; who has cheated on who?

Francis Reynolds is a British Artist who lives and works in Cambridgeshire, England. He returned to education as a mature student in 2007 to study Fine Art. Reynolds graduated with a Fine Art BA at Loughborough University in 2012. Since graduating, Francis started a family yet still achieves regular exhibitions nationally together with instructing Art students at a local academy. His paintings are held in Private collections throughout the UK and internationally. Reynolds’ practice can be seen to be quite destructive in as far as process. However, it can be said that the passive/ aggressive nature of the paintings lends themselves to the very nature of the human condition. Reynolds’ outcomes strive to question and reinvigorate the subject; its historical and contemporary context. Together with consolidating ideas of deconstruction; an act of taking apart and rebuilding. This may also highlight the deconstruction of conventions and what is expected from representational painting. The body of work can be seen to emphasise process by exaggerating the application and meticulous methodology through thin layers of paint and blocks of colour. This functions as a way of viewing what was there from past layers, and where decisions in the reconstruction of form were made.
