The two girls charmingly listen to the melody that the young guy plays on the pipe. Who will he choose? Each girl hopes that it will be she.
An important role in the picture is played by nature, which acts as the highest beauty and harmony. The composition of the painting is based on archetypal characters of the Ukrainian culture: the river, willow, and pipe. The symbols are ambivalent and reflect both light and dark sides of life, joy and sorrow at the same time.
