About The Artwork

Acrylic, acrylic based medium, archival varnish UV protection, oil, and pigmented Ultrachrome inkjet prints (collage) on canvas. The piece comes ready to hang. The basis of the artwork is an overpainted cover of a jigsaw puzzle of Vincent Van Gogh's Sunflowers from the museum shop of the National Gallery, London. The overpainting was digitally photographed and broken down on the computer until the original image began to dissolve. The result was printed out as pigmented inkjet prints and mounted on canvas (collage) with a transparent medium UV protection. Segments of inkjet prints are sanded and cut back to reveal glimpses of paint creeping out from underlying layers in which figure and ground seem to continually shift between the analog painting, and its digital counterpart. Barely visible beneath the obliterated surface, fragments of text and numerals emerge, recalling written communications, uniting detached image and emotion as a parody of the commercialization of art. The print allows the paint to be its most animal expression of itself, while creating a charming opposition between the sculptural qualities of paint and the flat surface of the print, leaving a picture plane marked by an effortlessly elegant dance of smudges, puddles and saturated strokes.

Peter Vahlefeld's visceral artworks combine a rigorous, process-based practice, continually rethinking the possibilities of painting. Using references to a broad array of sources, including art history, literature, and pop culture, he creates paintings that alternate between flat experience and dimensionality. Perfectly poised between European and American traditions (Art Informel, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art), his work combines complexity into a visual richness that is neither figurative nor abstract. The paintings unfold in an intricate, unpredictable interaction of layers and excess—a constant juggling of paint, prints, fabrics, mediums and effect. They draw their actuality from the collision between the visual codes of mass media and the subjective traces of painterly expression. Peter Vahlefeld has participated in a variety of solo exhibitions, art fairs, and venues such as Neumeister Fine Art Auctioneers (Munich), and Sotheby's (Vienna). His work can be found in private and corporate collections throughout Europe, the United States and Asia. Peter Vahlefeld was featured on the German television channel ZDF. He currently lives in Berlin.
