Sunrise on Paektu-san in North Korea. Painting

I have been to Paektu-san several times. Always from the North Korean side. Never China. It is a breathtaking place and possibly one of the most scenic in the world. For the Korean people, Paektu-san is a holy peak and their spiritual home. The birthplace of the Korean people. It is Korea's highest peak at 2750m. Its caldera, Chonji (Heaven lake) is over 400m deep in parts. In the winter it will freeze 4 meters thick. Temperatures can reach -40℃. It is the emanator of what the Koreans call Pungsu-jiri, a geomantic natural energy that transmits from Paektu-san down its 1700km unbroken ridge called the Baekdu-daegan, all the way, to Jiri-san mountain in South Korea. The Baekdu-daegan is the watershed of the entire peninsula. To disrupt its pungsu-jiri is to damage the spirt of the Korean people. The DMZ border acts as a ligature of this Pungsu-jiri and the people of Korea. 백두산은 여러 번 다녀왔다. 하지만 언제나 북한 쪽이어서 중국 쪽으로부터의 모습은 보지 못했다. 그곳은 숨을 멈추게 하는, 세계에서도 가장 멋진 장관 중의 하나이다. 한국인들에게 백두산은 한민족이 태어난 곳, 영혼의 고향이다. 한국에서 가장 높은 이 산은 2,750m이고 칼데라호인 천지(하늘못)는 깊은 곳의 수심이 400m를 넘는다. 겨울에는 수면이 4m 두께로 얼어붙고 기온은 영하 40도까지 내려가기도 한다. 이곳은 한국인들이 말하는 소위 풍수지리의 근원이다. 그것은 백두산으로부터 나와서 백두대간이라 불리는 한 줄기 능선을 따라 남쪽의 지리산에 이르기까지 1,700여km를 내리뻗은 땅기운의 흐름을 말한다. 그러니 백두대간은 한반도 전체를 가로지르는 분수령이다. There was a time under Japanese colonisation, that the Koreans were made to believe that the Baekdu-daegan (백두대간) was not the great anthropomorphic symbol it had always been, and they went about proving rather incorrectly that it wasn't one continuous ridge. This was all done on horseback. Yet, the Koreans knew as they had since forever, that the Baekdu-daegan is indeed one ridge, and now that the Japanese have gone, that is so. So, since the late 70s, the Baekdu-daegen has regrown in stature and is now often seen as a backbone that connects the Korean peninsula as one. Its energy is like the central nervous system and the waters it creates are like the blood that feeds the land. In North Korea it is known as the Paektudae-san Julgi, meaning all ridges in Korea return to Paektu-san, and if you knew what you were doing, you could walk on any ridge in Korea, all the way to Paektu-san without ever crossing water. Remarkable. 한 때는 일제가 백두대간이 더이상 의인화된 위대한 상징물이 아니라고 믿게끔 한국인들을 세뇌했다. 그들은 백두대간이 한 줄기로 이어진 능선이 아님을 억지 증명하려고 나섰다. 그 작업은 모두 말등 위에서 행해졌다. 하지만 한국인들은 늘 그래왔듯이 백두대간은 실로 하나의 산줄기임을 알고 있었고, 일제가 물러간 지금, 백두대간은 실제로 한 줄기이다. 그리하여 70년대 말부터 백두대간은 다시 우뚝 일어섰고, 이제 그것은 종종 한반도를 한 몸으로 잇는 등뼈로 일컬어지고 있다. 백두대간의 기운은 중추신경계와도 같고 거기서 흘러나오는 물줄기는 이 땅에 영양을 공급하는 혈관과도 같다. 북한에서는 백두대간을 백두대산 줄기라고 부르는데, 그것은 한반도의 모든 능선은 백두산의 일부라는 뜻이다. 이 말도 틀리진 않았지만, 실제로 확인해보면 깨닫게 되듯이 한국의 모든 산맥의 능선을 따라 걸어가다 보면 종국에는 물을 건너지 않고 백두산에까지 이를 수 있다. 놀랍지 않은가? The work process: I painted this from a series of photos I have. But there was no exact way to do it. Structurally, I knew I wanted to include the entire caldera, its many jagged pinnacles, and its highest feature Janggun-bong (centre-left). The rest was just applying the colours to suit a sunrise which I have witnessed. I started sketching roughly with charcoal, then applied thick colours of paint to build the shapes, and then started applying more colours and brush strokes to get the scree and grainy effect of Paektu-san, slowly pushing it into shape. Sometimes it felt like the brushes took over and did it. Other times it didn't. It took several days to complete and like a lot of my work it never feels finished, but what really is complete in life? Imperfections are important in my opinion. In the end, Paektu-san and Chonji are great subjects to work on. There is always so much going on, and if you've ever visited Paektu-san more than once, then you will know that each visit is never the same. It's always fascinating. 작업과정: 이 그림은 내가 찍은 일련의 사진들을 보고 그렸다. 하지만 정해놓은 방식은 없었다. 구도상 나는 삐쭉빼쭉한 봉우리들과 가장 높은 장군봉(중앙에서 왼쪽)을 포함하여 이 칼데라호의 전체 모습을 화폭에 담고 싶었다. 나머지 작업은 그저 내가 목격했던 일출광경에 어울리는 색깔을 입히는 일이었다. 나는 먼저 연필로 스케치를 하고 그 위에 물감을 진하게 칠하여 형상을 완성시켰다. 그 다음에 더 많은 색깔과 붓질을 가하여 백두산의 낭떠러지 아래에 쌓인 돌더미의 거친 느낌을 살려가며 조금씩 형상을 완성시켜나갔다. 때로는 붓이 저혼자 움직여 그림을 그리는 듯한 느낌도 들었다. 다른 때는 그렇지 않았다. 그림을 다 그리는 데는 여러 날이 소요됐지만 내 작품의 대다수가 그렇듯이 정말로 다 됐다는 기분은 들지 않았다. 하지만 인생에서 정말로 완성되었달 만한 것이 어디 있겠는가? 나에겐 미완의 것들이 더 의미 깊다. 사실 백두산과 천지야말로 내 작업의 가장 큰 주제이다. 그곳에서는 항상 온갖 일들이 일어나고 있어서 백두산엘 두 번 이상 가봤다면 갈 때마다 완전히 달라져있는 모습을 발견할 것이다. 그 광경은 언제나 날 매혹한다.
