A coastal folk scene based on the legend of Gene Johnson from Saint Augustine Florida. He was a semi-famous oyster farmer and alleged bootlegger who ran a popular restaurant from his beach-side shack near Matanzas inlet. There are stories of Gene being jailed by the sheriff, and then released so that he could host parties that various social circles attended. The foreground is painted with heavy impasto to create almost sculpted oysters and crabs that reach out at the viewer. This painting is done on ultra-durable archival gessobord.
