About The Artwork

In my new series, I turn to the body and corporeality. Understanding the body as a sexual object, as something both frightening and exciting at the same time, attractive and repulsive. By transforming its outlines, introducing my elements, changing bends, adding folds and holes, while preserving its general visuality within the bounds of perception, I offer the viewer a different corporeality in form, but very familiar in content. Each new piece of work becomes a revelation for me, allowing me to overcome the previous boundaries of perceiving corporeality. Regardless of how much the outlines change, what new shapes and bends appear - the body remains the body. Questions arise: What is corporeality? What can we consider an object of sexuality? Where does disgust begin and why do we perceive the same image differently? To create these works, I chose the technique of watercolor. This choice was dictated by the fact that such a method allows achieving a delicate and soft layering, working sequentially, creating delicate transitions from light to shadow, leaving the image free from dense layering and impasto. This becomes yet another harmonious way of exploring the theme of corporeality in my art.

Katya Tsareva is a UK-based multidisciplinary artist who currently lives and works in London. Born in 1984 in Krasnodar, Russia, she graduated from Kuban State University in 2006 with a degree in Architecture and Design. In 2012, Katya held her inaugural solo exhibition and participated in the Moscow International Biennale of Young Art. Recognized as one of the top 100 young Russian artists by 'In Art' in 2017, she had a solo exhibition at the Udmurt Republican Art Museum in 2018. In 2022, she contributed to a collective exhibition supported by Voices of Culture at the Basel Art Center, Switzerland. At the moment, one of the key aspects of the Katya's artistic endeavors revolves around the perception of the human body as a form and its potential to be replaced by other forms, thereby creating novel semantic constructs that influence its interaction with the surrounding environment. The artist focuses on transforming depicted models through found or self-taken photographs, modifying and refining them, which serve as the cornerstone of her painting practice. Adopting an academic painterly approach, she meticulously transfers the altered images onto canvas in a realistic manner. She experiments with a variety of materials such as acrylic, oil, watercolor and mixed media. Katya explores themes of space and identity, operates within the realm of aesthetic and sensual experiences while steering clear of direct references and narratives. Each alteration of image or space contributes to a rich tapestry of meaning, prompting viewers to reassess their perception of the world and their place within it. Exploring multidimensional expression, she employs various mediums including installation, object creation, and video work to further engage audiences in her exploration of perception and self-reflection. Participant in numerous group and solo exhibitions, international festivals, competitions, and art fairs organized by reputable institutions in Russia, the UK, the USA, and Switzerland. Her works have been featured in various international and Russian online and offline publications on contemporary art, are housed in the collection of the Udmurt Republican Museum of Fine Arts, and in private collections in Moscow, New York, Basel, London, and other cities worldwide.
