The Alchemists II; The Scarlet Woman Abducted Painting

As with all of these pictures, the aim was to create a relatively large scale explicitly erotic picture intended for a private space, with multiple historical and archetypical references. The idea was to make an artefact that might have hung upon the wall of a particularly expensive and exclusive bordello in Venice in the 17th century or perhaps sometime at the beginning of the 20th century (maybe it has been there the whole time...). As with all of these things there is an added occult or alchemical reference. The Three Alchemists, (it’s always three, it’s a magic number. The Englishman the Irishman and the Scotsman, the Three Wise Men etc.), abduct the Priestess or ‘Scarlet Woman’ to ‘work’ with her to produce the ‘philosopher’s stone’. The Magic text is on hand to help them in their working and the two tulips lie on the floor for later incorporation. The dark baroque colour scheme uses re, black, white and gold with are all colours commonly refered to in alchemical texts of the 17th century, but the 'Scarlet Woman's' fave and attire belong in the early years of the 20th century and have a slightly and deliberately art deco look. Decadence and luxury are, of course, timeless...
