This piece is painted from an old photo in front of a Chattanooga, TN bike shop. I started with a yellow background, which proved to be a lot more daunting than I thought. I reworked colors over and over again to get them to cohabitate nicely. The reds on the car alone took three days of work to find just the right values. While painting this piece, I began to think a lot of older days and the things we've lost; such as spelling words correctly. Typos seem to be everywhere now, from texts to news articles; and no one seems to care. I'd like to see a revolt against laziness and a reinstitution of spell checking and grammar. The car itself speaks to the care with which design was once suffused. I feel that with so much ease to which we gather and disperse information, find entertainment, or research, we have lost the desire to work in a way that strives above mediocrity. This painting speaks to the midcentury, when design was, in my opinion, at its very best. I try to incorporate that aesthetic and work ethic into my paintings. My style is reminiscent of fauvism and pop art. It obviously speaks to the age of color blocking and poster art as well. Though while developing this style, that was never my intention. I paint with bold colors in order to give immediate attention to the work, less it is lost for all time. I often include figures as well to develop a story. I believe non figurative art is mostly aesthetic, and I also believe that stories are what draws us deeply into any piece of art... from literature and music to visual art.

I spend a great deal of time exploring color; it’s subjective nature, it’s ability to arouse feelings in the subconscious, and the way it creates depth in two dimensional space. Shades and tone play a vital role in my images, giving emphasis to a certain detail, creating space between two elements, or adding a sense of gravity or levitation. I often think of how children see the world as I paint; simple shapes, bright, new colors, and a knowledge of themselves that often gets lost as they age. As a kid I knew my place in the world and didn’t care about my place in history. I’d like the simplicity of that life back. I love old things…. from my 17 year old dog to my 51 year old truck, from jazz to boxing; the ingrained narrative of things that have withstood time. I don’t buy into the concern for celebrity that plagues the modern digital age. I long for the days when people spent more time on porches with neighbors and less time in front of screens. I graduated with a degree in art from The University of Georgia and spent years chasing other careers; from sales to firefighting. Fourteen years later, after a serious injury, I found myself picking up art again. I now create art full time, and live in Chattanooga, TN with my wife and a herd of elderly animals.
