This work, from the Ascension Series continues the artist's exploration of social rules and gender. She coined the term “Estrogen tax” to describe the compulsory social charges levied on women based on their reproductive eligibility. Parallels between movement through emotional and architectural spaces figure frequently in her compositions. The thick handmade paper of the painting allows for numerous heavy layers of pigment that result in intense color. The patches of midnight blue antique silk velvet swallow light in a manner not possible with pigments and provide a void to counterbalance the movement of color. The dress was inspired by one from 1860 in the collection of the National Museum of American History. Much of her work, including this piece, is multidirectional, with the intent and perceived feeling of the piece altered by its orientation.

Terrell Lozada (b. 1962) is an American painter and sculptor living in Paris. She uses imagery and language to create works that explore the metaphysics of gender and power in contemporary society. Her work represents an internal, emotional world through objects subjected to unreliable or suspended gravity. Her aesthetic fulcrum is the late 18th century, particularly as it relates to French architecture. She works in a wide variety of media including watercolor, oil on panel, cast bronze, etchings and carved wood. She is currently exploring tin-glazed terracotta (faïence stannifère) to combine color and form.
