This is a well-known location in Brittany at the confluence of the rivers Elle and Laita in the village of Quimperle. The Elle flows through the left and middle arches. The Laita flows through the right arch which is why it is at an angle with respect to the other arches. The confluence sets up interesting patterns in the water. THe bridge creates shadows; the surrounding buildings create marvelous reflections. The combination is beautiful. This view has been captured by photographers and several painters over the last century. The Norwegian impressionist painter Fritz Thaulow best painted this scene in a painting exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1902. The bridge dates back to the 17th century. Over the years it has acquired a dark coating of dirt and vegetation. I repurposed the bridge to what it might have looked like when young.

I have a non-traditional artistic arc. I began as a Mathematician and scientist with a successful 30 year career at the world-renowned Bell Telephone Laboratories where I received many accolades and patents. I “retired” early and then began taking art classes. I recognized I had artistic talent and was mentored by the late S. Allyn Schaefer in landscape painting and by Enrique Flores-Galbis in figure and portrait painting. I work exclusively in oil. Now, more than 20 years later, I look back on the excitement of painting. I paint in the Impressionistic style with strokes of paint, each consisting of one or two hues, covering the entire canvas. I especially like painting water and its reflections. Here I am inspired by the Norwegian painter Fritz Thaulow, with his unparalleled water paintings. I start with a canvas toned with yellow ochre and white. This high-key ground is covered by transparent glazes in places, or allowed to peek through as a color in other places. This technique, together with broken brush work and careful placement of adjacent values and hues, creates the shimmer of the water in my works. I hope that my collectors enjoy my paintings as much as the enjoyment I had in creating them!
