About The Artwork

This piece was inspired by a place high on a hill behind my house referred to locally as 'the gate'. It is the gate to a walkway that leads up through a big and high up onto a mountain that overlooks the harbour town of Castletownbere, Bere island and both Sheep's Head Peninsula and Mizen Head Peninsula are visible on a clear day. it has one of the best views of Bantry bay from this part of the peninsula. It is a walk that many local people take as the stretch of road leading to the gate is very steep and in itself a good workout but the reward of the view once you turn around to descend is always worth the effort. I have photographed and painted this scene in every season and will continue to do so but this particular scene was from a day when the sea mist had come in and the sun was trying hard to break through . The fog and mist have their own unique beauty in this part of the world.

I loved art all through my childhood always drawing and painting. I won competitions through school and for my installations in design. I then went on to study Fine art at Crawford College of Art & Design Cork majoring in Print. Life took me in a different direction and after travelling the world I worked in digital marketing for nearly two decades owning my own consultancy for many years. After some big life changes & moves I’m now returning to art and where I am most happy - painting. Artist Statement: My is a direct influence of my surrounding landscape and nature in it’s raw glory. I live and work on the Beara Peninsula in West Cork on harsh rocky mountains looking out to large expanses of sea and skies. My land and seascapes reflect the vastness of my surroundings and the ever-changing light. I’m privileged that the surrounding landscape has an abundance of wildflowers with different varieties and colours blooming throughout the year and this in turn has heavily influenced my floral paintings captured from many a rural walk. I’m as intrigued by the bleakness of the winter landscape as I am overwhelmed by the sun-drenched blue seas of high summer. So far in my life, I have never experienced anything as astoundingly beautiful as sunrises in West Cork from October to December when the skies light up with a fire of deep oranges and pinks that have to be experienced to be believed.
