This work was conceived as an exercise in subtlety and obfuscation - in some ways, a novel twist on the classic idiom "can't see the forest for the trees", but in this case not being able to see the tree for the multitude granules of information that are used to collectively represent the tree. The "knowledge" in the title here is an allusion to the "tree of knowledge", while the "granularity" in this sense not only refers literally to the granularity of the myriad of impressionistic dots, brush strokes, and squiggles that comprise the composition, but also to the countless "grains" of information that constitute "knowledge", and this quality of knowledge comprising a sea of detail. In particular, the composition is constructed in such a way that there are distinct scales - macro and micro - in which scales different impressions arise. Leaning in close to the surface of the work, one is lost in a mad and swirling sea of specs, as if looking at some everyday object under a microscope or magnifier and witnessing a whole other universe of activity. At this scale, it is impossible to discern any macro features or composition. In contrast, however, stepping back from the work, a macro structure - although still vague and slightly ambiguous - begins to emerge... that of a tall tree, seemingly glowing in a twilight air that seems abuzz with magical sparks and lights. From the center of the tree, seems to emanate an orb, drawing one. Near the crown of the tree, appears very subtly the ever so slight impression of a warm and ripe fruit, perhaps a forbidden fruit. This is a work intended to be appreciated up close, where its intricately textured surface and detail can be intensely inspected and scrutinized.
