From 1972–1997 Christopher Wallace, better known as Biggie Smalls or The Notorious B.I.G. Christopher Wallace was born in New York on May 21,1972 and began rapping as a teenager to entertain people in his neighborhood. Wallace’s rap about violent street life were not fiction. He grew up poor in Brooklyn. Biggie was a gifted storyteller and his narratives about the often violent life of the streets were not fabricated, they were told with a grit, and realism that won him respect and credibility.
