Originally intended to be a classic portrait of this iconic couple, as I was painting the portrait I started listening to a podcast to learn a bit more about Jackie Onassis Kennedy. By the end of the history lesson I was beyond irritated with the Kennedy boy’s club made up of his Grandfather, father, and other family members. I made a decision in the moment to change the direction of this painting. Marrying into the Kennedy family meant the men were protected while the women got to grin and bear it. An icon of her generation Jackie's marriage is an iconic representation of many marriages of this time where the inequality of men and women was perverse. For many women of this time marriage was just as much about financial security as well as love. Although she a powerful woman of her time due to her new last name, behind closed doors she had so many of the same limitations as every other woman. #happybirthdaymrpresident

Historians use the art of written words to tell stories of the past. Artists use physical art itself. As someone who struggles to articulate words, I use art to tell stories and observations of icons, both past and present, and their profound impact on history and culture. How their words, songs, movies, poems, and quotes speak to the plight of human existence. Often mistaken for screen prints, the portraits themselves, always shown in black and white, are hand painted using acrylic. Each background varies between two studies of the icon. One look focuses on the color aura of the icon using a palette knife technique. The other is a mixed media patchwork study, telling stories about the icon, their journey, and legacy.
