who is the mathematician and who is the painter? why?
the background color is an emerald green. that color was common in the paintings found in Monte Alban, the archeological site close to Oaxaca City, where I live. I think that color contrasts so nicely with the skin color of oaxacans, which are zapotecos, mixtecos, mixes, etc

About The Artwork

My partner is a mathematician and I have inherited many of his friends. We have fun discussions on creativity and creative processes. Painters and mathematicians have more in common than what you'd think. The painting is part of a series of 6 paintings that I did on a very coarse canvas and so the feeling of the painting on the weave is very evident and I liked that a lot. it created a shine also, at night, when a light reflects on the painting. some people think that's bad, but it is really more like glitter. It might wear off once the painting dries completely. to paint the series I started with a monochromatic green version of it and then worked up the colors in oils.

I am interested in experimenting with sincretic images that capture the whole range of religious experiences. I am inspired by the architecture and mural paintings of the Aztecs, Mayan, Zapotecan and other peoples from America and I like to intersect them with the aesthetics brought to America by the Spanish, like virgins, saints and holy beings. I intersect them with a third paradigm which is my personal journey into Indian philosophies and the idea of enlightenment. The result shows where I am now, believing that art is the way, and being an artist is my religion.
