About The Artwork
The artwork was inspired by classical paintings of the Dutch Golden Age. The "Goldfinch" by Carel Fabritius presents in an illusoric way a portrait of enslaved beauty. In the picture we see a popular in its time style of a cage, to which a bird is attached with a chain. This symbolically depicted illusion of freedom suggested that I paint an another version of it. The newly painted bird sits on the oval ring of the cage as well. However, I play with the subject, return to classicity but utilize contemporary color palette and give the bird back its actual freedom. That's why it remains sitted on the colorful cage - I encourage it but it first and foremost it wants to.
