The painting is ambiguous and people might find their own meanings in it. It might be a cliche to say "all the world's a stage" but it could apply to this picture. There is a sense of life as a stage set. It was inspired by the world of acting and theatre, conversations between acts, the Green Room, the cafes and the audiences, waiters and temporary roles. There is also a reference to the "three fates" who are in the foreground rather than the background. Something is slightly off-key, there are reflections within reflections, this is a smoke and mirrors kind of world. Most obscure of all is the bottom of the painting which takes the form of a table on which the figures in the foreground are resting their arms. If people wish to, they could look at that world in the lower section of the painting and there too, they will begin to find figures and shapes emerge. The painting is quite complex and contains a great deal of subtle imagery that is deliberately ambiguous and free, and in the free flow of colour, shadow puppets of potential dramas emerge.
