To me, this piece represents The State Theatre on Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles. According to many sources, it is the largest brick building remaining in LA. It's location on a corner is particularly appealing to me, hence the dramatic angle in the composition. The ornamentation is more subdued on this building than many on the street, but when you take the time to look, it has a lot of ornate detailing going on. The entablature at the top of the building is some combination of, maybe, Greek and Moroccan? It is in a beautiful salmon color, which I pushed further to the reds. The black dripped ink on the right versus the dripped bleach sides indicates a quality of the place. The building offices are inhabited by sweat shops, the banks of windows being indicated by the tears in the linen. The building is dirty and not well maintained. But it is also lovely and delicate. I feel I learned a lot about painting while making this painting. Ink, bleach, acrylic, gold leaf, on linen. 48" x 36" x 2". This piece is painted in mixed media on coarse linen and stretched over a wood panel. The variety of materials enhance and obscure the texture of the linen, much of which is left exposed, creating a unique surface that shifts in changing light. The linen wraps the edges of the panel.
