About The Artwork

Acrylic, collage, engraving and lithography on fabric, 2023, hanging hardware included. This work is inspired by a snake-shaped headband made of hammered and embossed gold made in the period between the years 100 BC and 400 CE. A representation of this sacred object is printed on the bottom right corner of this painting. The masterful piece of gold is part of the Bogotá Gold Museum collection in Colombia, the largest collection of Pre-Hispanic goldwork in the world. The title of this work is Torcorá sleeps on the gold. Torcorá is the snake that, it is said, roams the Ciénaga de la Sierpe in the Mojana region of Colombia: an inland delta where important rivers converge. She sleeps on the golden totumo tree, guarding this treasure that no one can touch.

I am a Colombian artist living in Barcelona. Through art I have been able to connect with the landscapes and culture of my ancestors. I re-imagine Latin American art through historical figures, legends, landscapes and symbology inspired by the iconography of pre-Hispanic goldsmith masters. I am inspired by the revival of historical memory, the wisdom of indigenous cosmovisions and nature. My work frequently transforms landscapes into relief engravings with metallic colors that represent the mineral richness of the earth. For the last four years I have been managing Casa Jaguar /@casajaguar.studio/, an art studio in Barcelona where I collaborate with other Colombian audiovisual artists with whom I share my interest in developing a visual language that integrates pre-Hispanic art with contemporary art.
