About The Artwork

The inspiration for this painting came from the documentary Echo in the Canyon, where a specific place Laurel Canyon became the counterculture center of the late 60s and 70s known as the birth place of California folk rock. As the first bars of "Turn! Turn! Turn!" by The Byrds or the intro to "California Dreaming" by The Mamas and the Papas indicate, the California sound was something special. It symbolized new beginnings and hope in a time of great social upheaval. The painting is the last painting of my recent series: “In the sign of the Corona”: https://zonering.dk/xpdf/in-the-sign.pdf . In geological terms, Laurel Canyon is living on top of a giant fold in the Earth, a mixture of everything from below, a transverse mountain range and the mix of soil types, which include oceanic sediments, volcanic debris and compressed rock from deep in the earth, 12-200 million years old, caused by the shearing of the North American and Pacific plates as they move in opposite directions. An area exposed to landslides, topsoil erosion, faults . Air that pushes up against the mountains and rises, losing its ability to hold the moisture and causes rain, a longterm process of weathering and erosion, that actually can be accelerated by climate change impacts. What the painting should remind us all about is, that overcoming current existential challenges will (as suggested by Patric Huntjens in Towards a natural social contract (2021) require a fundamental shift from our current anthropocentric and economic growth-oriented approach to a more ecocentric and regenerative approach. In order to do that we need thousands of new epicentres like Laurel Canyon was for California folk rock, where with free flow of ideas and innovation can take place providing the USA, as the best it can be, a country of unbridled creativity, poetry an openness.

Zonation paintings focus on integrating and balancing the elements: lines, tones and colours. I follow an expressionist painting philosophy inspired by Cézanne, Kleé and followers. Motives: Copenhagen cityscapes, croquis, stilleben. Artworks in acrylics, oil, aqua oil, multicoloured chalk, aquarelle and pencils. Artist video: http://vimeo.com/5322606 Artist podcast (Fr): http://podcloud.fr/podcast/choses-a-savoir-art/episode/artiste-a-decouvrir-hans-jorgen-henriksen I use the acronym 'de Hansi' in order to distinct my painting activities from my professional work as a hydrologist. I am a Danish hydrologist currently working as a principal investigator and researcher at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland at Øster Voldgade 10, 1350 in Copenhagen (working in close cooperation with Copenhagen University institute for geology and geography). I am known for my research in the field of hydrogeology, with a focus on groundwater resources and their management, as well as the impact of climate change on groundwater systems. I have published many papers in the international scientific journals, and I am also a member of several scientific organisations.
