About The Artwork

A large oil on deep edge canvas gestural piece. This action painting was made spontaneously using the classics Karssis color pallet of earthy beiges and greys accompanied by a bold and gorgeous burgundy red with oranges and coral dusty rose pinks. A bold work and definitely a statement piece. This is my first ever attempt to work on a larger scale canvas as I have not exceeded the size of 100x120 and in art measurements every inch makes a difference. I allowed myself to put all my knowledge into each gesture but doing so in a rapid and fast manner so that I don’t overthink it! This piece was the first time I ever let myself feel free and I have to say it was probably the first time I trusted myself enough to do whatever my heart was pleased to do in a spontaneous and liberating manner. This piece is very special to me as it is the start of a new beginning of my art practice. I love my craft and I know it loves me back so I am confident enough to break the rules and be myself and enjoying every second of it!

Mary Karssis is a Canadian gestural abstract artist born in Toronto on March 17th, 1979. She attended York University and majored in social science. Human behavioral social study was always an interest from which she found inspiration and translated into art from an early age. Influenced by abstract expressionism artist like Joan Mitchel and Helen Frankenthaler, Karssis is eager to leave her own mark in the abstract art world with her original gestural, no brush technique. Brushes and tools are a creative restriction for Karssis as she feels her need for direct contact with the work is a necessity. “My energy and rhythm is stuck on the surface of each work and left there for everyone to experience even after my physical existence has ended”, as Karssis leaves raw canvas exposed and aggressive hand strokes untouched as if she is willing to bare her soul on each canvas revealing every intention, every thought, emotion and spontanious reaction. Although she works mainly instinctively she also finds daily inspiration in the bright light, vivid colors and organic surroundings of Marathon, the small Greek village of historical significance she currently lives in. Everything from the landscape to the main characteristics of ancient art findings of Greece effects her choice of color and texture in her work.
