As a child I was very interested in birds and their eggs - fascinated by the variety of shapes, colours and beautiful markings. I was also fascinated by the fact that a new life could grow in such a beautiful and exotic object - so much so that I am ashamed to admit that I took some blackbird`s eggs from a nest I believed to be abandoned, and attempted to incubate them in a cotton wool-filled matchbox in the warmth of the airing cupboard at home. Unfortunately they were broken sometime later and I discovered the vivid yellow and red chicks growing within. I was filled with remorse and guilt. In this painting the two young boys (twins? Or just close brothers?) are holding a large egg between them. They appear to be both excited and surprised by this object, if not expectant that something unpredictable might happen to, or emerge from, this newly-found curio. But this simple image belies much more complex relationships and feelings between siblings - darker and potentially more troublesome feelings. I have traced the origins of this image to the time when my mother was pregnant with my sister. My brother and I had been the only children in the house up to this point, so the announcement that we were to have a new sibling resulted in the mixed emotions depicted within this painting.

"Although I state that much of my work stems from the imagery thrown up by depression, I would say that it is also the imagery of unconscious connection.Indeed the two are irrevocably entwined. It is no accident that the appearance of animal symbols and the use of bodily products such as hair, urine and blood is also influenced by my former work as a veterinary surgeon. Some time spent in psychoanalysis has helped me to illuminate these connections to find a personal mythology, which I believe connects to a universal meaning of what it is to be human. The `otherness` of animals, their power, vulnerability, unselfconsciousness and instinctual drives, and their relationship with us, are potent symbols of qualities we also have - qualities which we struggle with in our attempts to remain in control of ourselves and our society. It is where these tensions meet that my work is situated." Studio: Sculpture Shed, Spike Island, 133, Cumberland Road, Bristol, BS1 6UX. Tel: (0117) 929 2266; Email: michael.hayter@blueyonder.co.uk
