About The Artwork

Ultramarine is part of the collection Rain at Sea - An Aeolian Tale, forming a solo exhibition celebrating my studio opening at the paradisiac Aeolian Islands, Sicily. This new body of work presents a series of multilayered abstract landscapes featuring imagery evocative of the local natural realities, suggesting growth, transition, and movement. Created with a multitude of mediums, from acrylics to calligraphy inks, oil paint and sticks, these new paintings exponentially expand my investigation of the relationship between gesture and painting. The dynamic canvases and works on paper evoke associations with nature that at times suggest both sea and land, shifting subtly between representation and abstraction. This collection presents paintings which are extremely physical compositions, reflecting the dynamic range of motion and intensity of focus brought to their making. At the same time, these are contemplative and suggestive compositions translating my observations and memories of natural phenomena, such as changes in light, the movement of leaves at the fields, the rushing of the rain on the ocean and movement of the wind, into a language of abstraction that is at once lively and dynamic; deeply personal, yet open to interpretation. “There is always the thought of colour: I remember a situation, a day, a landscape, and it brings me to an image of a colour I want to describe. Then I start with that colour.” - Cristine Balarine

Cristine Balarine is an emerging Brazilian artist based at the Aeolian Islands, Sicily. With a Master’s degree in Architecture from the Bartlett, University College London, and a background in Florentine Renaissance art history, Cristine’s art practice seeks to rebel from the rigour and ultra-rationalization of her architectural background in her large-scale abstract compositions. Cristine's origins in architecture include a wide-ranging experience in several large scale cultural projects, most recently as a site associate architect at the Zayed National Museum of the UAE by Lord Norman Foster. Cristine’s works have been selected to be exhibited in international galleries and events, including a upcoming charity auction at Sotheby's in May 2024, London Biennale 2023, Florence Biennale in Italy, World Art Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and Saatchi Art's The Other Art Fair in London. Her passion for collaboration has led her to engage with musicians and DJs, merging visual art and music in immersive performances. She is currently establishing an open studio and gallery space in the picturesque Aeolian Islands in Sicily where she will exhibit her solo works starting in spring.
