This work on paper became quite painterly and has a real sense of depth of color and line. The density of lines in this work creates a kind of vibration that is quite energetic. I'm interested in art that facilitates a general sense of connectedness to the space we occupy. I think this work is successful in doing this. It is very grounding yet soft. It packs quite a bit of emotion. Like much of my work this work has many layers of both hand painted washes and screened paint. For me process always yields my art and I don't start with an idea but rather let the work flow from my work process. I don't start with a design in mind when I start a work and no two are alike. I sometimes try to mimic a work that I like however they each come out quite distinct. I move between a painting space and printing studio. I embrace imperfection in the entire process and I don't want to be a master printmaker, the choices and mistakes I make a long the way add to these works and I build them up until I feel they are living objects. These works have lived a life in my studio and the paper is worked, not perfect. Some spend months in the studio others days. In this way my work is more like drawing or painting. I use paper primarily because I believe it forces a greater dialogue between viewer and object. The ubiquitous nature of paper allows the viewer to move towards it and engage in a way that canvas does not. Most people step back from a canvas and I want my work to encourage a viewer to step into the space I have created.
