About The Artwork

"My work is a conglomerate of the ubiquitous counterposed with rare, precious, or divine elements. By approaching a new piece in a state of “no mind” I begin a work in an aleatoric way, adding specificity and objectivity as the piece develops so the work becomes a dynamic objective statement. My execution is influenced predominantly by Basquiat and Picasso, but I am also influenced more subtly by the work of Jasper Johns, Edward Munch, Cy Twombly, Ha Chong Hyun, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, and Marc Chagall. I incorporate the use of symbols and language into my work, often drawing upon poetry and prose from Shakespeare and Dante. As the work develops the language often gets covered, leaving fragments showing. I love art because we learn about ourselves by looking at it. And that is the great goal of my work, to create space for self-expression. My paintings are like mirrors that reveal deeper aspects of ourselves by what we see and how they make us feel." About the piece: An expressionist representation of a horse and rider racing for the triple crown. The pair have won the first of the two major US Races, the Kentucky Derby, and Preakness Stakes, as depicted by the two 24k Gold crowns, and is in motion running the third: the Belmont Stakes. He has not won the race yet, as represented by the blacked out third crown. The piece also represents the race of life; the race for the ideal. The horse and rider are frozen in time, in motion towards the immortal recognition of the highest attainable achievement. Purposefully captured before it is attained, the statement is made that they will never attain it, not literally, but they will always be in the race, and the glory of that is just as real.

Adam Martin Disbrow is an American Expressionist painter with national exposure. His art addresses issues of relationships, spirituality, sexuality, duality, beauty, relativism, nature, and dominion. His paintings involve many layers and often include symbols of Disbrow's own creation and of historical significance. Also discernible in his work are heavy textures, interpretive colors, language, and formal techniques which combine to make each painting a unique statement. His intention is to create a free space for the mind and eye to express itself honestly. My execution is recognizably influenced by Basquiat and Picasso, and more subtly by the work of Cy Twombly, Jasper Johns, Edvard Munch, Ha Chong Hyun, Pierre Soulages, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, and Marc Chagall.  The paintings are a commentary on history and culture. They address current and ancient issues of relationship, spirituality, sexuality, beauty, divinity, relativism, nature, and dominion. Freedom, entropy, life, death, and time are key concepts of my work. I incorporate the use of symbols and language drawing upon classical and modern poetry and prose for inspiration. As the piece develops the language gets mostly covered. I love art because it is like a mirror that reveals deeper aspects of our nature by what we see and how it makes us feel.”
