About The Artwork
Vishnu is one of the principal deities of the Hindu trinity (Trimurti), alongside Brahma and Shiva. Here are the attributes that define Vishnu and make him recognizable among the Indian gods: Vishnu is often depicted with blue skin. His eyes closed, in a state of inner contemplation, peace, and tranquility. Vishnu sleeps on the serpent Adisesha (or Ananta). Vishnu is considered the preserver of the universe. He intervenes only when the cosmic order (dharma) is threatened and then takes on different forms (avatars) to restore balance. Vishnu is often depicted holding a conch shell, surrounded by chakras, standing or seated on a lotus which represents purity and transcendence. The various stories associated with Vishnu's avatars are told in the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. Vishnu embodies benevolent concepts such as preservation, protection, and meditation. In painting Vishnu, I enjoyed exploring the rich symbolism associated with this character, including the attributes he carries (conch shell, discus, lotus).
