About The Artwork

Winter landscapes inspire me Here, I saw a reflection of a tree and its bare branches floating in a reflection on the water in front of it. It immediately struck me that the branches looked like the roots and that it looked like an uprooted tree. I thought of the millions of refugees around the world. Each one carrying the history of their ancestors within them, I thought of the way countries around the world through the ages are built and enhanced by the people who come, carrying their roots with them, to live in strange lands. I thought of the courage needed to make the break with one's physical roots This tree with its floating roots/branches became a symbol for the eternal journeys that humans are forced to take. There is an endless trail of uprooting amongst the worlds populations It is a lot to carry.

I am a fine artist, originally trained in South Africa, but working in London and Paris. I have continually renewed my work, which has always remained rooted in traditional practices such as painting, drawing and graphic work. My work is always figurative and often combines all three practices with the use of threads of red, to interweave the different elements as a means of embedding the threads into my drawings and painting. For a long time I painted only Amaryllis Lilies but more recently I have begun to make one-off artists books. Though my subjects might change, my obsession has always lain in telling a story without words that depends on observed reality and its relationship to the imagination.
