About The Artwork

The thing about constellations is that they are available to everyone who has sight. Our ancient ancestors the world over used the constellations to navigate uncharted seas, to record time, determine planting of crops. These astronomers – Babylonians in the 8thC BC, Chinese astronomer Shi-Shen, 4thC BC, Mayans - more named astronomers the Greek Eratosthenes and Ptolemy, Persian astronomer Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi, Poland’s Nicolaus Copernicus, Danish astronomers Tycho Brahe, Johannes Kepler - formulated our understanding of the cosmos through their astute observations of the movements of the stars in the night sky. My uncles who flew fighter jets in WWII used the constellations (and slide rules) to fly their planes. We forget how compelling and instructive the stars in the heavens are to humanity. In order to mark the passage of time and the seasons, the Chinese primarily used the orientation of the Big Dipper constellation relative to its pole star in early evening. So I use it too – Leo Minor.
