About The Artwork

The Unknown Stories of Women Fighters War is a masculine concept where women are usually portrayed from a victim's perspective. However, the female role in the conflict goes beyond this stereotype, becoming protective warriors of their land, their home and family. "The Unknown Stories of Women Warriors" is a multimedia project started in 2015 and still under construction, where we seek to tell these anonymous stories that have not yet been written. These warriors are repeated throughout history becoming anecdotes that are present in each struggle, thus transforming local tales into global stories where we can relate as human beings regardless of race, origin or religion. To show these hidden stories behind past wars is to recognize that the feminine side has always been present, but covered under masculine memories, it discovers our past through our mothers, sisters and daughters and shows their role in the construction of our society. Bangladesh is a young country that gained its independence from Pakistan after the war of 1971, the most important milestone for this nation. The so-called Freedom Fighters are considered war heroes and thus one of the most respected in Bangladesh: brave men who fought for the liberation of their homeland. However, little or nothing is known about the role of women in the war of 1971. In official history their role was reduced to victims of rape, leaving combat stories out of the knowledge of the new generations. Many of these women disguised themselves as men to fight for their freedom, many of them were nurses on the battlefield or dedicated to courageously transmitting what was happening through international radio. This project celebrates their stories and memories, providing them with a space in the new Bengali society and recognizing their bravery and contributions to freedom which in one way or another played a crucial role in the independence of Bangladesh
