About The Artwork
Nine years ago refugees and asylum seekers started coming to Israel from Africa. In this artwork I take inspiration from the makeshift churches in south Tel Aviv. The costumes of Nigerians and Sudanese, I see, going to church in the weekends. Emmanuel Lam, the handsome man in this photograph, came to Israel along a tortuous route, from South Sudan, with his mother and two sisters. I met him in the street while working on a big photography project involving asylum seekers, and decided to do a studio session with him. He is very proud of his heritage, but with strong and complex opinions about Africa, Refugees, and the West . I hope this portrait inspires hope and life quest. 10% from the sale will be donated to assaf.org.il to help asylum seekers in Israel.
