The Kaizergracht in Amsterdam was dug in 1615 and named after Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor. It is the widest canal in the centre of Amsterdam. The intention to create the gracht as a boulevard was abandoned for various reasons amongst which were a lack of infill material as these were consumed by the fortifications that were also being built at that stage. In 1949 all the elm trees were cut down due to elm disease and linden trees were planted. How many merchants have plied this waterway on their way to their homes or warehouses...
