About The Artwork

The work in inspired by the old technicolor films of the 1940/50's and intentionally challenges the viewer to question what it is they are seeing.Using artificial light as a sculptural medium, and creating what is predominantly a beautiful landscape the work attempts to question the manner in which society fears change and challenges creativity. Working in area that have already seen damage caused by the climate crisis the images attempt to coerce the viewer in to overlooking what is being presented to them. The notion of what is real and what is not, and how we are manipulated as individuals by seemingly innocent interactions is at the core of this work. Shot at dawn the image shows dead trees at the beach in Bembridge on the Isle of Wight. Each tree is lit separately by LED's with a coloured gel and the light is balanced to create the etherial scene in the photograph. The landscape image was taken from the sea just prior to high tide. The beach at Bembridge is littered with the trees that have fallen from the soft clay of the cliff edge, most have slipped down slowly and remain vertical, even thought they have long since died. As the tides rise and more of the cliff is eroded, its only a matter of time before the homes become monuments like the trees.
