About The Artwork

The main influences on my work are: Plato, the Golden Ratio, Mark Rothko, Piet Mondrian, Picasso. Succesive lockdowns in Briltain meant I could no longer get out to do what I normally do. I take images from reality and transform them into a Platonic version. Once stuck at home I had to focus on my immediate surrounding: rooms, garden, ceilings, floors, tables, bookcases, etc. When I felt I had more or less exhausted those sources of images, I went back to photos I had taken in prepandemic times. As I usually have in recent years, I transformed the images to be symmetrical and straight, but I also added colour. This picture is of a wall in Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire.

He is author of two books on architecture and sociall history: "Look Up! Winchester" and "Look Up! Salisbury". He has come to regard himself as an image creator, using the camera to record reality and transforming it into Platonic views. His images are impossible – however much some may resemble reality (see his essay, "True Colours" at his website: www.christophernewberry.com).
