About The Artwork

Photomontage, contemporary, digital portraiture. The work shows the entrance to Lisbon Castelo into which has been inserted a photo of an elderly women from the medieval district of Mouraria, by the name of Egilda. Dona Egilda’s image was found affixed to a house wall of her neighborhood, Mouraria, in 2009, together with that of 2 of her neighbors. Her name appears at the bottom of the image (‘Dona Egilda’). The artist has wanted to create a holistic portrait of Egilda as linked to her native city’s most important medieval remains. He has honored the physical integrity of both images put together by him. In order to give the montage symbolic meaning, he has enhanced the relationship of light to shade found in the two images with digital means. The work is printed on Hot Press Fine Art Smooth Bright White paper (an acid free, 100% cotton rag media with a bright textured finish, yielding an extremely high color gamut and black density). It is signed and numbered by the artist, accompanied by a CoA, and shipped without hanging hardware, in a very sturdy tube protected against folding and puncture.

I am an experimental artist working in digital painting, graphics, abstract photography, animation, and textile design. My work is abstract in the sense that I invent shapes, colors, and textures without reference to representational concerns. Working entirely digitally, I consider the boundaries between domains of visual art as entirely permeable. Since I work with a large variety of tools aided by a mastery of controlled random, the outcome of my composition and design processes are unpredictable; their results often straddle the line between established visual-art categories. The majority of my visual work is found on SaatchiArt where my musical compositions and German and English poetry are found at www.ottolaske.com. Outside of my artistic work, I am the founder and director of the Interdevelopmental Institute (IDM), a graduate-level teaching institute for those interested in adult-developmental thinking and research.
