About The Artwork

eMovere was born out of a need to try to understand the most intimate, emotional and multifaceted meaning of migration, looking at my family, who emigrated to northern Italy after World War II, and at myself, who left Genoa and arrived in Buenos Aires, a city that last century saw the arrival of millions of Italians in search of a better future. The ocean that separates us becomes, at the same time, a place that unites us. Documenting this passage was useful to me in order to expand the meaning of migration as a social fact that does not only concern the person who decides to undertake the journey, but extends to the whole community and affects it profoundly.

Valentina was born in Genoa in 1982. After 10 years as a commercial photographer, she felt an evolution of her visual vocabulary. In 2019 she moved to Buenos Aires where she began using this transformation to explore issues of gender, memory, and identity. Her long-term projects are inspired by poetry and literature, steeped in the magical realism that pervades Latin America. Her works often act as a kind of psychoanalysis as she explores social issues such as immigration and patriarchy. • Emptying one’s self to make space for the unknown is just the beginning of this process. Searching for the essential and the beautiful found in everything which does not please us. Project: Lo Sagrado. • Uprooting from the known nurtured a desire to attempt to understand the most intimate, emotional, and multifaceted meanings of migrating. Project: eMovere. • Currently, she explores masculine anti-patriarchal movements in Latin America, aiming to create new visual narratives in juxtaposition to gender stereotypes. On going project: Efecto Mariposa. She is co-founder of “La Settimanale di Fotografia”, a cultural association created to develop and deepen all things visual through meetings, exhibitions, cinema, workshops, and performances.
