About The Artwork

Limited edition fine art print of 6 – Elephants are the largest land animal remaining on earth. They hold a special place in my heart. Here a lone bull snacks in the mid-morning sun. Males will spend most of their adult lives wandering alone until it is time to mate. He wandered just perfectly into the frame with my 600mm lens attached. I was hoping to capture his whole body in the frame to show his size. This is one of the largest elephants in East Africa. I was satisfied with how the shot was coming together, and then he flapped his ears, adding to his already magnificent profile. After seeing these beautiful animial in the wild you cant help but want to protect them. Photo © copyright by Derek Nielsen

After 20 years behind the lens, Derek Nielsen’s journey to capture, share—and ultimately, help preserve—the fragile beauty of our planet has taken him to more than two dozen countries and every continent. His stunning photographs don’t just inspire, they connect—linking audiences and resources all over the world to wildlife, landscapes, and people in desperate need of assistance, from Rwanda’s endangered silverback gorillas to the overfished waters of Antarctica. First moved to contribute to global conservation efforts while photographing the ominous splendor of Iceland’s Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, a haunting manifestation of climate change, Derek provides a portion of the proceeds from each of his sustainably framed and matted works to on-the-ground, local conservation efforts, including The Conservation Alliance and Borneo’s The Borneo Project. A native of Chicago, Derek carries a friendly midwest smile eager for a conversation with strangers. If you see him in the field or out at events don’t hesitate to ask any questions or just start a conversation about wildlife, conservation, and of course photography.
