With the intention to document how the skull and other symbols and rituals of ancient Mexico persist in contemporary Day of the Dead festivities I have captured from 1967 to 2017 some of the most creative and significant manifestations of the “Fiesta de los Muertos”, mainly in Mexico City. The bilingual photobook "To die is to live in Mexico / Morir para vivir en Mexico" is a journey through the Day of the Dead festivities from ancient to present times. It is also a reflection on life and death and a visual testimony of the tradition through five decades. For the free PDF of the book please contact mario.mutschlechner@gmail.com. “In Mexico all days are Day of the Dead” 2014. Ave. Juarez, downtown Mexico City. For years I roamed the streets of Mexico City in October / November in search of creative and significant manifestations of the “Fiesta de los Muertos”. Unrelated to drugs, crime or politics the book strives to illustrate the best of the ancient tradition. On spotting this demonstrator I felt compelled to portray him as a memorial of contemporary atrocities and the resurgence of " El México bárbaro ". The 56 cm print comes in a limited edition of 9. Title, author and year of manufacture are included on the print. The print comes with a 2 cm white border. Made to order on archival cotton paper in 10 days plus shipping. For open edition inkjet prints in custom size please contact mario.mutschlechner@gmail.com

As an industrial photographer from Cologne, Germany, based since 1967 in Mexico City, I used my craft for decades to document scenes and subjects in sharp, detailed and well lit images. Back in the seventies, when simulating views of other planets, I was looking for a different perception of reality and found it with infrared color film. Today I enjoy a creative freedom similar to that of a painter. With the right combination of photograph and digital manipulation I can create images that are a tribute to imagination and beauty. Starting in 2019 I present on Saatchiart 15 collections as a synopsis of my photography, some digitally remastered and others digitally modified, for sale as archival inkjet prints in different sizes.
