About The Artwork

This composite portrait of Jean-Michel Basquiat is a unique work, directly related to a unique artist. I met Jean-Michel in 1986, in New York, when I was making a film series about contemporary artists across the world for international television. My co-authors and I had chosen Jean-Michel to join a distinguished cast that included Cindy Sherman and Barbara Kruger, Anselm Kiefer and Joseph Beuys, Lubaina Himid and Miriam Kahn, Howard Hodgkin and Anthony Gormley, and a whole host of other celbrated artists of the time, whose names still resonate. But none resonates more than the name Jean-Michel Basquiat. Back in the mid-1980s he was seen by many as a shooting star who would soon vanish from the sky. He did vanish, of course, by dying at the shockingly young age of 28, of an overdose. But still his star shines, brighter than ever. These pictures arise from a film interview that I conducted with Jean-Michel when he was at the height of his rock star success ... 24-years-old, with fame and money to burn. But also someone quick to reveal his vulnerability, along with his spectacular talent. Jean-Michel kept putting off the interview again and again - aware that it could affect his reputation, if he got it right or if he got it wrong. You can see in his face the many moods he expressed during the interview, when it did finally take place: doubt, suspicion, anxiety, defiance - and just a touch of the charm that seduced so many. I put these images together for the big Basquiat retrospective, in London, a couple of years ago. I have now launched them as a limited edition. Historic documents associated with a historically significant artist. The five portraits are brought together elegantly framed and mounted. They are accompanied by a signed, handmade booklet that tells the story of their origin.

ARTIST CURATOR. I work as an artist curator, minus the hyphen. I attempt to balance both roles: seeking the concentration and focus of making images, objects and installations that are directed at the individual viewer; embracing the collaborative and enabling task of shaping exhibitions and events that are created in the company of others. As an artist, I work invariably with a high definition camera, but my intention is to reach beyond the image - towards the making of an effective and affective object, perhaps even an experience. Inevitably, this leads me to explore both materials and the immaterial, scale and the use of space. As well printing on art paper, I print onto aluminium, acetate and fabric, especially linen and cotton. When appropriate, I like to let the prints hang freely, unmounted and unframed, so they can respond reflexively to movements in the air. And I use translucency to animate the prints further, as they alter their appearance in response to changes in the light. Although these frequently large prints are at the centre of my output, recent exhibitions have included video projections, sound installations and handmade books, or booklike objects. Making books as been an interest for a long time, but now it is moving towards the centre of my output, as a complement to the translucent prints As a curator, I seek to create exhibitions that both generate and contribute to conversations, that cross boundaries and widen horizons. In addition to visual artists, my exhibitions often include contributions from performers, using movement, music, words and ideas. At present I am getting great pleasure from working with poets. I think poetry and visual art -both of them elusive and allusive media- can become great companions.
