About The Artwork

His first wife died of tuberculosis at 37, in 1886; his work became all about grief, he assumed that love and sensuality in his life were over. Florence began modeling for him in 1899, they married in 1901, she 21, he 53, to the consternation even of other artists. He died in 1928, she survived to 76. I photographed her marble portrait in Paris in 2022. She is serenely joyous in her skin, confident of her person.
