About The Artwork

I had a few images in mind before heading over to Africa on safari, including an elephant portrait or a detailed closeup of its skin. To me, it’s important to have a few images drawn up in your mind to help give my eye direction while out in the field. There was this large bull elephant grazing on vegetation down by the water’s edge one midafternoon inside Tarangire National Park. Perfect. He was alone. No other vehicles were in sight to complicate things. My driver, an expert in African wildlife, knew he could get us close to the image I had in mind while keeping all of us safe. Many of the large animals in Africa have bird companions that usually eat parasites off their skin. More often than not it’s a harmless relationship and this elephant certainly didn’t mind. While using the soft light from the passing clouds, I began to compose images similar to what I had in mind before coming here. As usual, nature always does it better.

After 20 years behind the lens, Derek Nielsen’s journey to capture, share—and ultimately, help preserve—the fragile beauty of our planet has taken him to more than two dozen countries and every continent. His stunning photographs don’t just inspire, they connect—linking audiences and resources all over the world to wildlife, landscapes, and people in desperate need of assistance, from Rwanda’s endangered silverback gorillas to the overfished waters of Antarctica. First moved to contribute to global conservation efforts while photographing the ominous splendor of Iceland’s Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, a haunting manifestation of climate change, Derek provides a portion of the proceeds from each of his sustainably framed and matted works to on-the-ground, local conservation efforts, including The Conservation Alliance and Borneo’s The Borneo Project. A native of Chicago, Derek carries a friendly midwest smile eager for a conversation with strangers. If you see him in the field or out at events don’t hesitate to ask any questions or just start a conversation about wildlife, conservation, and of course photography.
