Overworked in Tokyo - Limited Edition 1 of 5 Photograph

When I visit many countries as a multi-platform artist once people find out I do is photography they always seem to want to set me a challenge. I was in Tokyo producing some music bands and my manager said a friend was asking westerners to submit photos of what summed up Japan and Tokyo in particular to be part of a short exhibition. The photos would not be sold or available to purchase but visitors would vote which was their favourite. I took this one and it was voted best photo. I was a bit surprised as I thought they may not get the humour in it but they did get the theory behind it. In Japan people work for the company and if asked to work long hours for no extra pay they are expected to do so. This is because you are expected to love the company and also because there is no social security benefits if they don't work they are literary out on the street or starving and many people either put up with the very longer hours or commit suicide. So I noticed every day on the train from Tokyo to the suburbs where I was living so many people were asleep. I saw one or two in the row but maintained if I saw 4 in a row I would snap a photo of them as it summed up Japan and Tokyo to me. This photo is also significant because it was my first professional digital photo. Although I can do all types of photos one of my main strengths is to see something and instinctively know its a great image for a photo and snap it rather than rely on set up shots. So for this reason I had gotten myself a small digital camera to wear on my belt just in case. So as I said it was my first digital photo. Although I like the original and may make that available here soon in recent years I like the idea of turning some photos into artwork and turned this one into a watercolour.
